Research Themes

My research focuses on the role of SLC7A5 amino acid transporter (Minidiscs) in Drosophila brain development.

In mammals, mutation in the SLC7A5 transporter has been shown to cause microcephaly (impaired brain development).

I have demonstrated that inhibiting Minidiscs and its partner CD98hc in larval brain cells results in a smaller brain. The aim of my PhD project is to determine how amino acid transporters affect brain development.

Using genetic, imaging, and molecular biology tools and techniques, I will identify the molecular and cellular pathways regulated by the Minidiscs/CD98hc transporter during brain development.
