Research theme
My research focuses on the perceptual and cognitive development of infants (0-24 months) in multisensory contexts. The general objective of my works is to identify and understand new functions of olfaction in the organization of early cognition, by specifying as accurately as possible (1) the involvement of olfaction as a cognitive resource in infants and (2) the complexity of the stimuli, contexts, and processes that shape the development during infancy.
Interactions between the senses are foundational to knowledge construction. A part of my research aims to specify the sensory means through which infants communicate and develop early knowledge about their peers, particularly through early facial recognition. Among the various sensory modalities, olfaction plays a fundamental role and can influence perceptual activity in other sensory modalities. My research explores how infants use their sense of smell in interaction with other sensory modalities in the learning process, specifically investigating interactions between olfaction and vision. I am particularly interested in the influence of social odors on infants' visual processing.
Another part of my research is dedicated to studying olfactory skills in human newborns and the underlying mechanisms of olfactory perception. For newborns, human milk holds a particular sensory and hedonic status. My work focuses on identifying specific olfactory signals present in human milk that trigger specific responses in newborns.
